Svenja having coffee at her favorite place in Berlin 'Süßkramdealer' in Friedenau

German photographer Svenja Paulsen never wanted to leave again after visiting Berlin for the first time. "Being a photographer, a great source of inspiration are all the many special places in Berlin."

I was born and raised in Northern Germany, in Schleswig by the Schlei, a fjord that opens into the Baltic Sea. Having lived for some time in Hamburg, Weimar and Malmö, I moved to Berlin to do an internship during my studies in the spring of 2006. It didn’t take long until I fell in love with the city. I knew immediately that I won't leave for a longer period of time. In short - when my graduate semester was just around the corner, I didn't have to think twice - I just stayed... and I'm still in Berlin.
Being a photographer, a great source of inspiration are all the many special places in Berlin: cafés, restaurants, markets and stores. The people behind it often turned their passion into their profession to achieve their vision with a lot of feeling. I'm fascinated by these people and their stories. It is also very impressive to see how well Berlin cooks. Even at the smallest cafés you will often get simple and delicious "delicacies of daily life". I want to capture this life honestly in my photographs and stories.
My favorite neighbourhood is definitely Kreuzberg to go out. I love to be in the Gräfekiez, around Bergmannstraße and Oranienstraße. But I feel at home in Friedenau, living with my boyfriend in a nice little neighbourhood. It’s a little more quiet and very green there. Three special spots in Friedenau I can warmly recommend:

Süßkramdealer — deli and café at the most beautiful place in Friedenau with delicious pastries
Lula Deli deluxe — sweet café and deli with the best coffee and great breakfast
Piri Piri — small restaurant with honest Portuguese cuisine in a family atmosphere
